about

Jim Sagel (1947-2002) Sagel was born in 1947 in Fort Morgan, Colorado. His grandparents on both sides were immigrants from the same village in Czarist Russia. In 1970 he graduated form the University of Colorado at Boulder with a B.A. in English, and found himself drawn to northern New Mexico. He settled in Española and began his long career in education as a substitute teacher at Española Valley High School. He married Teresa Archuleta, a weaver, built an adobe house with the help of his father-in-law, Jacobo Archuleta, and learned Spanish. In 1976 he earned a Masters degree in creative writing from UNM. He began teaching at Northern New Mexico Community College, the Institute of American Indian Art, and at various UNM campuses in northern New Mexico. He was appointed director of the Division of Humanities at UNM- Los Alamos, a post he held until his untimely death (by suicide) in 1998.
"Three collections of his bilingual poetry, Hablando de brujas y la gente de antes, Foreplay and French Fries, and Small Bones, Little Eyes, were published in 1981. In the same year, Sagel won Cuba’s Premio Casa de las Américas for his Spanish-language collection of short stories Tunomás Honey. Sagel was the second United States citizen in the prize’s history to win the prestigious award, and Tunomás Honey remains Sagel’s most-recognized work." (Texas Archival Resources)

Cipriano Vigil: I was born and raised in the small village of Chamisal, New Mexico where I received my early education. Part of that education was in the local schools, but most importantly, it came from my mother and grandparents, and from the local musicians. One of the most influential learning experiences was gathering at the “Resolanas”, the sunny side of a house, to play music. Several musicians of all ages would gather there to practice and also to share music and songs. For some it was a learning experience, for others it was a practice session. These musicians became known as the “Resolaneros.”
